New students starting the Warwick MSc in Tunnelling & Underground Space have now had a few weeks in which to explore the Library's resources. The session in the Library at the start of term focused on databases such as Web of Science and EI Engineering Village but also on resources such as the Construction Information Service, OHSIS (Occupational Health and Safety information Service), British Standards, ScienceDirect and the ICE E-book collection. I hope all these are proving useful.
Students needing additional help with using these resources, or with finding information in general, are very welcome to contact me for follow-up sessions.
This photo shows the Eupalinos Tunnel, a very early example of a tunnel aqueduct, cut through a hillside on the Greek island of Samos in the 6th century BC - an interesting reminder of the challenges faced by engineers then. Teams started digging from both sides of the hillside and met in the middle, although various theories have been put forward as to quite how they managed this. The tunnel is 1036 metres in length.
