Ideas

Writing about an entry you don't have permission to view

Looks like James is getting his inspiration from the same place as me because he's coming up with some good ideas…mostly ones that I/we have already thought of, but it is nice to hear it from someone else….especially from a target user.

I have long been interested in Friend of a Friend and how it might be used to create interesting linkages between blogs, especially in a nice unified system such as ours. The reason there is a built in default Friends group is so that people can add in their friends and we can do clever things across many blogs with those groups. For instance, if James added me into his friends group and I added him into mine then the system knows something about the relationship between us and can do things that it wouldn't usually for non-related people in the system.

It could be as simple as doing buddy-list kinds of things so that my list of friends shows up when I log in and I can see a list of their blogs.

You may well want to have some slightly more flexible permissions. Perhaps you want only your friends and their friends to see a certain entry, you could do that.

Once our gallery feature is added, we may well have something fun like, show me all the pictures with my friends in, and this could search across your galleries and the galleries of your friends to find pictures of you all (assuming people add the right information against each picture)

You might want your friends entries to be highlighted in an aggregator view so that you can easily pick out ones you are intestested in, or even only see their entries, ignoring everyone elses.

When you compile your About me page, it could be used to add to your FoaF profile, which would be published via your blog. People are just finding uses for these profiles, but I believe they could be really interesting in the long run once you get enough people using them.

Obviously I've yet to do any of these things, and may not any time soon, but who knows….it could be neat.
