Catering staff
The Westwood/Raffles debate has certainly evoked a great deal of response.
One other point which I think is very important that may have been overlooked in people's disappointment on losing their respective places to eat and meet – and that is the treatment of the staff who work there.
I think the catering staff are quite badly treated under normal circumstances and probably one of the lowest paid too. However, now moral is extremely low – they have been issued with redundancy notices and told they have to reapply for another 'possible' position within the university. I guess many feel so shocked, upset and badly treated that they wouldn't want to work here even if another position were available.
They don't even have the voice that we (the staff and students) have in email, blogs etc
My heart goes out to them.

Hear hear – while we are all moaning about not being able to get a bacon batch at short notice, other people have been treated far worse than us in this episode.

Yes they do seem to go that extra mile to give a smile and provide a friendly welcoming service and this is how they are re–paid. It must surely leave them with a bitter taste of working for the University.

I really hope there isn't large scale job loss, I've worked with most of the caterers over the last year or so, and was a Westwood
inmateresident last year. It's just that bit worse that those people who will lose their jobs are people I know. It's stupid and pointless to close Raffles in particular, and there is scope for Westwood to retain some catering for the people who are up there. Well done Warwick (wazzocks).17 Jun 2005, 23:04
