Wünderapps for the Mac..
Writing about web page http://www.pixelmator.com/
I'll be the first to admit that it has to be a pretty brilliant little application to get me to part with my money. Thankfully most of the applications I like and use regularly are free, or have free versions that do what I want. The biggest problem for me has always been Photoshop. I started using it a few years ago (back on Photoshop 5) and grew to like it. Admittedly I didn't make use of the advanced features but I got used to it and as the versions rolled past I got more and more accustomed to it. If it came to perfoming image manipulation outside of Photoshop I was generally lost. I welcomed products like The Gimp but no matter how much I tried to get on with them, I just ended up getting annoyed at the way they worked.
Since my recent acquisition of a wonderful Mac Mini i've been pondering the Photoshop conundrum. I don't have the money to buy CS3.. and the current version of Elements for the Mac (v4) is not a Universal application.. and I can't seem to find any solid information on when v5 comes out. And because of Adobe's general neglect of the Mac version of elements, I feel quite reluctant to lay more money on a company that hardly needs (or cares about) my custom.
Well, I think today I might have found a rather modestly priced saviour. Behold Pixelmator. Its a small installation, it only costs $59 (don't you just love a weak dollar!) and is just such a great little package. It is well presented, has been given a nice modern skin (in the style that Leopard should have had.. but won't) and seems to do most of the stuff that I do in Photoshop. It has layers, it seems to be laid out and structured like Photoshop..
The standard download is also a free trial.. so well worth giving it a go! Will spend a bit more time trying it out but can forsee my debit making a bid for freedom from my wallet in a few weeks :)
