O, how I love Term 2
Well, ladies and gentlemen, it is that time.
Time to sweep away all hope of sanity or free time or…anything else, for that matter.
Yes, it’s…
PROJECT REPORT TIME!
Dun dun DUNNNN!
Can you tell I’m feeling a little melodramatic?
Anyway, basically, this is how it works.
There are 8 of us. The MAXIMUM word limit, including a summary, is 30,000 words.
30,000/8 = 3750 words each.
That would be ok.
Except…other people’s sections are probably going to be quite long. Longer than mine, and containing important technical content which we really can’t afford to leave out.
Snip.
And even if they aren’t, I still need to summarise my long blethering into the summary, so in effect I have to write it twice.
Snip.
Thus leaving me with a word limit for my section of about…
2000 words. Maybe a little more. But 2500 absolute maximum.
I have 1629 words already. Another thousand is a finger snap. And six sections to finish. OK. Good thing brevity is one of my strengths, huh?
But that, my friends, is only the beginning. Mmm. Because after you’ve written your section comes…
The Editing!
And that will be an interesting process indeed for a 30,000+ word document, complete with pictures and mountains of appendices.
Good thing I don’t have much else to do, eh? Like…have a life, or anything like that?

That’s not so bad. When I did mine, there were 14 of us on Formula Student (and so we had a 60,000 word limit, which I think we went over by about 50%). Two people did the editing together – I think it damned near killed them… Seriously though, don’t get too cut up on the word limit. It wasn’t rigorously enforced from what I can remember (and anyway, shorter sections tend to read better, so your bit should stand out as being good :-) )
