JAMSOC MEETING
Date: Tuesday, January 11, 2005
Venue: Jack Martin 4 Conference Room
Present: Greg, Mary, Paul, Hugh, Kerri, Steve (Residential Staff) and Agye/Charles, Harry, Yantra and Kate(?) (Reps)
Valentine's / Speed Dating Social
The Graduate Club was booked by Greg for Tuesday, February 8th, 2005 from 9 p.m.-12 a.m. It came to light that this date fell during Reading Week (affecting most Arts and Social Sciences students) and Reps argued that most students would have gone home. Greg to cancel the original booking and attempt to book another Tuesday or Thursday evening, even if not close to Valentine’s Day.
The four students who were present formed a “Valentine's Party Committee”. This committee to decide upon the starting time and schedule of the event in consultation with other students. They will work on the organising the event without the residential staff, but will keep staff in the loop via emails and will let staff know if/when they needed assistance. Kate to create a poster for the speed dating event.
Some concern was expressed about the equal rights for gay students, and whether the Union might be unhappy for such an event to take place. Mary to discuss this with the SU.
Paul suggested that selling tickets, and creating a sign-up sheet for each house, would encourage students to make a commitment to attend, as well as giving a much better idea of the numbers to expect. Reps to sell tickets for £1 each, and circulate the sign-up lists.
Greg indicated that c.£40 – £50 would be available for expenditure upon materials for the event (e.g. coloured paper), which could include food, but not alcohol. Greg offered to do copying at Laser Lizard, so long as 3 or 4 days’ notice is given.
Greg suggested that in order to identify each other by name for the speed dating event, a roll of sticky name labels would be more cost effective than clip-on badges.
Pub Quiz
Representatives to form a Pub Quiz Committee based on those who had the most interest in this area, and to organise the event. Residential staff will provide assistance when requested.
Week 9 was suggested – either 1 or 3 March. Greg to check the availability of Zippy's on these dates.
JM Football League
Charles has arranged dates, fixtures etc. The first match will be this Saturday, January 15th.
It was suggested that trophies and trophy cases in the foyer of each hall would be attractive and motivational. Agye and Yantra to liase on this. Initially, Charles to contact Kate Dodd, Director of Student and Ancillary Services. Greg suggested pendants could be an alternative trophies, and could be placed inside the existing notice boards in each house.
Proposed creation of a Student Society
Yantra brought to the meeting the relevant papers that need to be filled out. The Society would need to have a constitution, to include objectives, governing principles etc. Creating a society would release extra funds, enable students to control their own budgets, encourage participation, and facilitate the booking of events at the Union. Yantra to speak to SU Societies Officer and report back to other Jamsoc Reps.
The meeting discussed whether a JM student who had not joined the JM society would entitled to attend JM Society events. Greg suggested a two-tiered system whereby non-members would pay more.
The outgoing committee execs could go around to kitchens encouraging new students to join during the arrivals weekend at the start of the University year.
Informal Social Event
Paul agreed to design a poster inviting everyone to the Rootes Bar (previously known as the Airport Bar) from about 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 18th.
