How many leadership theories can exist?

question.jpgStarting working on my PMA I felt bombared with information about the leaderhip theories. I think that leaderhip theories follow in a way the pattern of leadership definition: There are almost as many different definitions of leadership as there are persons who have attempted to define the concept (Bass, 1981).

And I'm pretty sure that most of you will suggest that there's a logic behind it, that of people's personality. I thought about it as well and it's a good and sound explanation. But, according to the field of psychology an individual's personality can be explained or rationalised with certain models like the Big 5 personality dimensions and so on.

Therefore, I'm not really sure if there's a need for all these theories (without challenging the contribution of all those academics and not in this field). And if so, why?

    I feel exactly the same way Ilektra! Haha. Too many theories out there, some better that others, but still, too many all the same. I have started a system of elimination, where I am excluding the theories that I don’t think will be appropriate for Waveriders, then, i will focus on studying the one’s left over in more detail.     I agree with Mimi’s approach.Leadership is a function of the followers, communication and situation. So whilst deciding the director and CEO’s characters, I think the best approach is to pick a couple of theories that stand out the most to you and match them up with the leaders’ character.Like you said, there is no right or wrong answer provided you support it with strong arguments!Goodluck ;) xxx
