New books received in April

Writing about web page http://webcat.warwick.ac.uk/ftlist

You will find a list of new books received in April if you open the Library catalogue and select the top link to Useful Links, and finally New Titles. More good books to help with your revision or dissertation work, I hope!

Index of Legal Terms in Westlaw

Westlaw now includes an Index of Legal Terms - it looks very useful! This option appears on the Westlaw home screen when you log in. You can search for a definition of a legal term in online law dictionaries including Jowitt, Stroud and Osborn, and also in UK legislation, case law and journals.

Westlaw student website

Writing about web page http://uklawstudent.thomsonreuters.com/

Westlaw are developing a website called Law Student - something similar to Law Campus, the Lexis student website. This is separate from the database - it includes current awarenesss, an online magazine, podcasts on legal topics, database guides and help with gaining a Westlaw certificate. More is planned for the near future, so if you have not seen it yet, have a look and see what you think!

What's Encore?

Writing about web page http://webcat.warwick.ac.uk/

Encore is a new service, advertised both via the catalogue and the Library home page - it replaces Research Pro and works in much the same way. If you search Encore you can find books, journal titles and details of articles all in one search. However, Law databases are not compatible with Encore, so you would miss a lot! Also, the results may not be relevant, although sometimes you may pick up some useful material from unfamiliar journal indexes.

You will always find more relevant results if you use the excellent search functions in our databases, many of which have subject indexing and assigned keywords to help you and save you research time. Have a look, and as ever, please tell us what you think of Encore.

New journal index – Scopus

The University has taken out a new subscription to a journal index called Scopus. This covers a wide range of academic journals, and although it has a strong scientific bias, it may be useful for law students and researchers looking for more than what the law databases provide. Scopus includes some law journals and it may prove more useful to you than Web of Knowledge. The WebBridge button will allow you to check whether any article you seek is available in another database, or in print on the shelves. Have a look and tell us what you think!

Old Law Commission reports on BAILII website

Writing about web page http://www.justice.gov.uk/lawcommission/publications.htm

The Law Commission has revised its website, and it is now possible to find online versions of their early reports which were previously available only in print, as well as more recent ones. To find them, select the Publications link from the Law Commission home page, then you will find information about reports published before 1996. Just click the link to British and Irish Legal Information Institute. Reports are available back to 1965; some may not yet be digitised, but we should have them in print on Floor 4 of the Library at classmark 41 N 20 (Law Commission).

Family law

If you are looking for articles in the journal called Family Law, we have it in printed format only, on Floor 5. There is currently a catalogue record for an electronic version within Lexis, but unfortunately Lexis no longer provides this title. I have asked for that record to be removed to avoid confusion!
