Euro–Anthem Song Contest
Who has the best national anthem?
It's time for the Euro-Anthem song contest. Vote for the best national anthem. You can hear them all by clicking on the links below. Only the current official anthems are included (no historical, regional, separatist, or unoffical anthems, and only the civic anthems from Scandinavia - no royal anthems).
Do you want to vote? In good Eurovision Song Contest fashion, everyone has 10 votes, and can distribute them as they wish - all 10 for one song, or one each for 10 songs, and anything in between. Send your votes to me via the contact link.
Voting doesn't preclude commenting on the songs and which ones people think should win. Before the voting starts, the favourites are: 1. France 2. Czech Republic (but essential to hear the MP3) 3. Bulgaria 4. Rumania 5. Germany 6. Netherlands 7. Slovakia. Here's the list:
NOTE: the midi files load quickly but are very variable; the MP3s are often well worth hearing, but some of them are very large files on feeble servers, and take ages to download even with broadband.

I agree, but then I'm biased :-P
On an aside note, though the German national anthem used to start "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles", the first two verses are now no longer sung; probably because "Germany, Germany above all" was no longer appropriate post-war.
Nowadays only the third verse is sung which starts "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit" (Unity, Law and Freedom). Thus it's now only called "Deutschlandlied".
Just thought you might like to know ;-)

Absolutely – that led me to put "Song of the Germans" ("Lied der Deutschen") in brackets, but it should have been clearer. Of course, the tune, Austria, is by Joseph Haydn (Austro-Hungarian). A web page with information on the anthem tells me that the third verse tradition began, apparently, in 1952 after attempts to adopt a completely new anthem failed, and goes on "After Germany had become reunified on 3rd October 1990, Federal President Richard von Weizsaecker confirmed in a letter to Chancellor Helmut Kohl, dated 19th August 1991, that the third verse of Hoffmann von Fallersleben's Lied der Deutschen with Joseph Haydn's melody are the official national anthem of the reunified Germany."
It certainly gets some (but not all!) of my votes.

I seem to remember from a recent football match that Azerbaijan has an amazingly long one (certainly memorable) – and that's almost Europe.
(Obviously it's not us.)
My personalvote would be with FRance, you can't beat the Marseillaise for sheer gut-wrenching gore!

Well I'm biased as well, so I'm gonna go with Sweden =) Seems like many countries experienced a serious case of anti-nationalism; today, we only sing the first two verses of our national anthem publicly, and sometimes exclude the second as well (which includes "I want to die in the North"). We used to sing the last two when I was in the military as well, but they call for loyalty to the death, defending sweden's rights with "mind and hand" and to fight for the mother soil. Maybe not really that p.c….

It is a stirring example of what a patriotic and passionate anthem should be.

and a few more words – the melody of the British anthem (God Save the King) is identical to the old Russian Molitva Russkogo Naroda (Russian Nation's Prayer, although the monarchist text also similar to god save the king) and is the same as the German anthem Heil Dir im Siegeskranz (or Kaiserhymne). The current German (Republican) anthem Deutschland, Deutschland über alles is sung to almost the same melody by Joseph Haydn as the Austrian anthem Gott erhalte, Gott beschütze, Unsern Kaiser, unser Land – or the Kaiserlied. But that's history.
The French anthem is the best though but I guess I am just repeating myself.

My favourite anthems:
1. Germany (Austria-Hungary)
2. Russia
3. Finland/Estonia (Both with same melody)
4. Iceland
5. Slovenia
German anthem is simple, perfect, melody by Joseph Haydn in Austria. But for lyrics, Austria-Hungarian lyrics is even better than the German one.
Remember to sing the lyrics slower to obtain the "Kaiser feel"
Russian anthem is another wonderful one. It shows what anthem should a supernation have. A bit communist-like.
Finnish anthem is simple, but the melody is incredibly beautiful.
Icelandic anthem is also very good one (I am Icelander)
I dont like French anthem. It is too revoluntary and oppressive. It has slight feel of metal.

Liberté chérie, tu vas bien au-delà des frontières embrassant tous les peuples de la Terre, mais c'est en France que tu naquis sous ta forme moderne il y a un peu plus de deux siècle et nulle autre hymne ne te rends mieux hommage !
Dear Liberty, you don't know any borders and you embrace all the nation of the Earth ; but it's en France that you were born through your modern appearance over two centuries ago and no anthem celebrates you better than the frenche one !

The match is hard.
Really I think there are THREE winners with EQUAL impact..
Soviet (because it is reallya the SOVIET anthem), German and French.
Maybe it is bitter..but these anthem has been forged in the blood…and the music is exactly what I should expect from this kind of nation.
They taste like a breath real expection….

These are the words to the Slovenian anthem:
Žive naj vsi narodi
ki hrepene dočakat' dan,
da koder sonce hodi,
prepir iz sveta bo pregnan,
da rojak
prost bo vsak,
ne vrag, le sosed bo mejak!
And english:
God's blessing on all nations,
Who long and work for that bright day,
When o'er earth's habitations
No war, no strife shall hold its sway;
Who long to see
That all men free
No more shall foes, but neighbours be.

The national anthem of the Serb Republic and Serbia is by far the best one, then the French "La Marseillaise". The worst ones are "bosnian" (Bosnia is historically Serbian/Chetnik land), Croatian and Albanian.

Sheesh, what's with the over–patriotic crap. Everyone is proud of their country, thats great, but can't we have an objective opinion every now and then?
I like Germany's, it sounds melodic and emotional. Sweden is only iincluded as a midi which is unfortunate as the real thing is quite good.
French is exactly what you'd expect from France, and so is the Russian. Both quite good.
I'm American and I think our anthem is okay as well. I also like the Meican anthem.

The new from Montenegro is beautiful and has a sense of grandeur in it. Japan, Canada, Netherlands/Holland, Sweden, Russia and both the 2 of Denmark are fine anthems as well.
I also like the U.S.anthem and the U.K./G.B.is quite alright.
I´m norwegian but of the norwegian anthems I prefer two older ones, that have been official anthems in the 1800s. A simple version of them are here: link
In the north of Europa and northwest Russia, there´s a former nomad people called sámi (in french "les lapons"). Their anthem is fine and can be heard here: (their language is not scandinavian but vaguely related to finnish, but with slavic–like pronounciation)

As a fan of Formula One auto racing, I hear the German, French, and Italian national anthems frequently. I've always thought the best of the many anthems is "La Marseillaise." The Berlioz version is outstanding, as are the recordings by Mireille Mathieu and Milva. While the anthems of Germany and Italy, and probably a number of others, are quite nice to listen to, for me "La Marseillaise" packs the most emotional punch.

Hi,
I personally like the anthem of Wales very much.
The anthem of Germany, Czech Republik, Poland, France, Italy, Albania, Spain, Scotland, Denmark (Kong Kristian) and Russia are also great.
Besides this, I like the European anthem very much (lyrics by Friedrich Schiller, melody by Ludwig van Beethoven) – actually it is the final chorus of Beethoven´s 9th Symphony.
Sorry that I cannot deceide for only one anthem ;-)

Anthems
The Ukrainian and Russian Anthems build up fantastically, The Serbian Anthem starts with a wonderful tension, the German and French Anthems are brilliant but slightly over familiar, The Portugese Anthem has a great variance in mood, the Croatian Anthem is wonderfully idiosyncratic, the Greek Anthem has a very ethnographic feel and i’ve always loved the opening of the Irish Anthem (I’ve never liked the simplicity of the English Anthem, even though I’m English myself) But my favourite would have to be the sustained melodic power and quiet confidence of the Dutch Anthem, Wilhelmus.

1. Russia (if you get the Red Army Choir verision – you can’t beat that)
But I must say that nations with “less power – more feeling” are ranked high in my mind. What’s with a song that makes you go to war for you nation? when you can have a melancholic melody that makes you wanna die for your nation. (examples for this is: Israel, Sweden… )
And for the notice: I just can’t see why people are so worked up about “La Marseillaise” which in my opinion is probably the most overrated anthem of all… perhaps together with USA’s “The Star Spangled Banner”...
Also The European Unions “Ode to Joy” is clearly a masterpiece, but it could be argued as cheating, since it was a awsome tune for over 300 years before it was adopted.

France, Germany, and Russia, in alphabetical order, are the absolute classics. Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, and a few more, also have very good hymns, but if we have to choose the greatest, the definite anthem, for me only two qualify: Germany and Russia. Both are beautiful, larger-than-life, and bring us images of grandness, passion, and glory, whether we understand their language or not, and like the countries in question, or not.
Both are faithful to two great nations, that shaped our world as few others did, with centuries of great minds (writers, philosophers, composers), great suffering, and great glory. This is what anthems are all about. Its hard to choose between them: the russian is more heroic, even epic, the german is more tranquil, maybe the perfect hymn, in part due to Haydn’s beautiful melody.
When listening to the russian anthem, our mind drifts between the “great motherland”, the very soul of Russia and the russian people, with memories of Czars, Lenin and the revolution, the iron will of a few dictators – and the suffering of so many, the largest country in the world, and the aesthetics that is so peculiar to them, which is reflected in their anthem. Its majestic and beautiful, and at the same time, (that “russian soul” ever present), unsettling and haunting.
When listening to the german anthem, we think of beauty, grandeur, and pride: the pride of a nation with so many landmarks and achievements, that it would be impossible to think of history, without Germany. Even forgetting the great wars, it would always be incomplete. The german anthem carries us away to a perfect world, where there are no wars, no Kaisers and no Hitlers, where “Deutschland, Deutschland über alles…” is but a magnificent melody, taking us along, with what is best in us: honor, loyalty, friendship, and pride. All these things seem so vague and obscure, in our times, and yet, in these few minutes they seem so clear and tangible.
All things considered, if I had to pick a winner, it would be Germany. Its all that a anthem should be, and more. But most important, be it german, russian, french or romanian, its great to listen to them all, and remember the history, culture, and grandness of Europe, which unites us all, and should make us all, europeans, very proud.

Hi! My favourite anthems are Russia (I like our anthem!), Germany, La Marseillaise and GB because it’s classic. Excuse me for my bad English

Rui: nice fantasy sarcasm...you are either a. incredibly stupid and insensitive or b. a Nick Griffin follower.
For me, Marseillaise wins – love the melody. Did anyone see the Father Ted episode when he would stand up when it was played? Ha.
I find Hatikvah somewhat depressing – doesn’t suit the name, it doesn’t feel hopeful.
Montenegro one is also so depressing…and again the title is quite wrong…May? It sounded like a stormy November evening.
Russian one is just scary.
Like the Italian one…trust the Italians to have something so pretty and un-militaristic.
Also quite like Slovenian one.
Spanish one I feel I might like if I heard it properly…but the MP3 link didn’t work…sounded like the theme tune to a bad soap to me! maybe just the damn MIDI though.
Belgian one I quite like, lively.
Malta one is not bad either.
Like Netherlands one, calm and un-militaristic.
Most of the others kind of sound the same to me. Pomp and, er, pomp.
Neither UK nor Irish ones (and I am from both nations, since I have one parent from each) do much for me, sadly. (Although the official Irish national anthem is in fact Danny Boy, and every Irish person knows this ; – ) )
By the way, where is the EU anthem, Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, in this? I adore it.

C Grayling: you are american, right? Although you say that you “are from both nations” (=England and Ireland), you sound like a true american (=USA). Whether this is true or not, do consider it as an insult. I dont just call people “american”, without a reason.
You seem to judge each national anthem, according to the TV shows you watch, and to your own “un-militaristic” view, of what a hymn should be. However, each nation above, has its own history of blood, suffering, and – yes – military accomplishments. I hate to break this to you, but real life is NOT like a TV show. A nation’s anthem, isnt just some “cool song” that you can relate to.
Dont take me wrong – I also dont take this “euro-song contest” too seriously, nor am I trying to make it too serious. I just cant understand your whining and american-like ideas, about russia being “just scary”, etc. Maybe you’re a frightened teen, or gay, or both: a frightened gay teen? If so, everything is clear now, and I’m sorry to bother you.
Where IS that “EU anthem, Beethoven’s Ode to Joy”? So beautiful, and “un-militaristic”! What a shame.

Polish one is the better. It makes you feel like start singing as well “Marz, Marz Dabrowski!!” (whoever he was). Extremely movin. Much more than the, I agree, overdone Marseillaise.
The Russian one (male chorus a capella) is as good as the polish one.
My own country (Spain) has a not very beautiful anthem (be it the Republican or the current Marcha Real. Both are rather greyish). In fact I don’t like any one of them (the only beautiful one is the Valencia hymn).
The Italian is rather nice as well. It has a rather happy feeling inside.
The German, Portuguese, British… I don’t like them. Correct as anthems, but I don’t see notihing special
