RaW – what a load of luvvies
Writing about web page http://media.guardian.co.uk/
Well a few of us got a bit cross about the annual Guardian Student Media Awards, which in spite of the name serve only the written media, excluding the exciting, vibrant, sexy world of student television and radio.
So we wrote a letter to the Guardian, which you can read in today's Media Guardian.
It's even got our names on it.
For ego-massage purposes, I'll put up a picture of it or summat later….

The busiest news week of the year…shame its a holiday
As any campus news whores(1) reading this will agree, a lot of term time is spent desperately searching for a big important or dramatic news story, and the rest of the time is spent making small and unimportant stories seem more dramatic than they are. It's partly true in the grown up world too.
I'm sure I've read some journo or other lament the fact that in addition, when a big story breaks, they're on holiday.
And so it seems to be right here on the George Best of news patches(2), Warwick campus. A whole term's gone by where the excitement has matched that of a knitwear auction..and as soon as term ends, it all kicks off.
Firstly, there was a pretty serious car crash on the Gibbet Hill road on Tuesday. A nissan sports car crashed at about 4am, yards from the entrance to campus, closing the road until 11. Also a bit mysterious, as both people inside the car have completely vanished and police don't have a clue where they are.
Then, a local rag used the freedom of information act to uncover that 131 Warwick students were caught copying and pasting text into their essays in the 2003–4 year. The numbers at Coventy Uni were almost three times that.
Of course anyone on campus today would have been inconvenienced in some way by a massive power failure. A substation in Earlsdon was knocked out somehow. The library and cafe library were closed until 10.30, and the IT network hasn't been running all day..presumably why I can't get my emails!
We also heard about a dodgy incident on campus on the penultimate night of term, but can't confirm it yet.
So that's about a terms worth of news in 5 days. And no-ones around. Sheesh. Any more interesting news let us know!

Have you got the RaW banner?
Writing about web page http://www.radio.warwick.ac.uk
Ok, you all know what I'm talking about. That big 15-foot fuck off RaW banner; the big yellow one that's been on the piazza since February, reminding you all how to listen to your favourite student radio station...well it's been flamin' nicked!
In case you don't know what I'm on about…

Well, if you nicked it for a joke, or as a drunken prank, be warned. We're onto you. Seriously.
We're tackling this Crimewatch stylee and getting as much help from the general public as possible.

You can listen to our special Crimewatch UK appeal, by clicking here.
If you know who's got it, do the honorable thing, and dob them in. Phone 02476 73077 - all calls are kept confidential
In other news, these glasses really don't suit Fiona Bruce.

I–chee–wowa! RaW news hits London!
Writing about web page http://www.radio.warwick.ac.uk/news
In a random turn of events today, some RaW news homies, including News Editor Mr Doidge, Olivia, Emily and myself had ourselves a little road trip into the big smoke today, on the premise of covering a half-decent story - and we ended up covering about 4 stories...and interviewing an Ewok!

The big story of the day was a rally at Downing Street protesting about the pathetic amount of attention governments have paid to the situation in Darfur, Sudan. Genocide is happening again and despite all the "we've learned our lessons from history" crap, Rwanda, Bosnia, Armenia and the Holocaust have blatently told nothing to the government of this country.
The Aegis Trust thus held a rally shouting at Mr Blair and co to pay attention, delivering a dossier to his house and allowing genocide survivors to tell their stories for about an hour. It wasn't the most remarkable or attention grabbing rally, but it had some dignity to it.
Afterwards we got some good interviews with the man in charge of the rally, and a remarkable woman who survived the Rwanda genocide by hiding for 100 days – she was just 13 at the time.
The interview in full and comprehensive coverage of the rally and its effect will be on RaW News Insight this Wednesday at 5pm.
Then, wondering into London with some time to spare we decided to do a little bit on the Star Wars premiere which takes place tomorrow night. Emily interviewed a guardsman and almost got trampled in the process, and after hanging around Leicester Sqaure long enough we found some proper- and I mean proper – Star Wars geeks who were already setting up to watch the premiere.
But best of all, we spied a very short man hanging around outside the cinema – David was his name, and as it turned out he played an Ewok in Return of the Jedi! I-chee-wowa! And apparently he's in with the stars, chilling – he said – with Ewan McGregor this morning.
You can judge for yourself if he was telling the truth tomorrow at 5pm. Though we believed him.
Olivia was also fearlessly approaching random strangers, on the premise that the world has heard of RaW News and wants to be interviewed by us. The tactic worked on a seriously whacked out dude in Trafalgar Square promoting the decrimilisation of cannibis, and probably selling a hefty amount of it too. We'll turn that into news as well somehow.
So the verdict on our 'assignments' today: RaW News rocks!

One big long election
Writing about web page (pun borrowed with kind permission from Jack&Ed)
After 30 days of campaigning, a mass debate, a dozen political interviews, almost twice as many packages, 500 flyers and an exit poll, RaW - your unashamedly, unequivically, infallibly fantastic student radio station - brought the big election to an unforgettable end.
A marathon 8 hour broadcast, similtaneously in Cholo, on the air, on line, broadcasting from 2 studios, a purpose built newsroom and a rootes bedroom – last night has never been done before and may never be done again with such flare and success.
For those of you who missed it, News Editor Chris Doidge presented the coverage from RaW's Studio 1, with punditry from Dan of the Wilson CRaW. There were live bulletins every 20 minutes from Olivia Case, reports via satellite from London, as well as Steve Hoon and Dave Haigh driving around Coventry, George Thomas at the election count in Warwick and Leamington (which was very close!) and, of course, Jack and Ed down in Cholo with a load of drunken Sabbs.
The union shut up shop around 1.30 – but we weren't content to just leave it there, oh no! In what must truly be a first for RaW, carried on regardless, broadcasting from a bedroom in Rootes until 5.05 am…11 people were crammed into 1 room at one point, and we still brought all the results in as they happened, alongside some dubious music (including Mr Blobby at 1 point).
What a night! It was a totally boring election, but the coverage was the most interesting you'd find anywhere!
So heeeeeeeoowwwwwwge well dones to everyone involved in their own awesome ways....Aadil Qureshi producing, Craig and Ian and Chris engineering, Emily and Olivia producing the bulletins, Steve and Dave all over the place Jack and Ed and Hannah and the Dan-WC for making it worth staying up until dawn, with no caffeine an empty stomach.
RaW people – it's where it's at.
Brand New RaW Lookielike!
Writing about Haircut Melodrama from Esprit de l'escalier
Yes, it's been a while, but the drama surrounding the fierce competition between Mssr Wilson-Craw and myself has led me to add yet another RaW Lookie-Like to the much hallowed gallery.
This week, Daniel Wilson-CRaW will be: Frodo Baggins!

And it's all about the hair.

New pope…and who told you first?
Writing about web page http://www.radio.warwick.ac.uk/news
Well, probably BBC News or summat. However if you were in the laundrette at 5pm or for some bizarre reason, listening to RaW, you would have heard it first on the all new RaW News!
With the lovely Heather and myself reading, and Tom and Dan waving information at me through the studio window, we might have been one of the first stations to break the story.*
Smoke appeared at about 5.05…we announced it just 3 minutes later!
Would like to see the Boar or WTV do that! Live news. Love it. :p
- OK, maybe not. But we beat IRN, and were probably the first student station to break the news.
